UP – Now a Uttam Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath inherited a state which has witnessed the peak of dynast and appeasement politics by the previous governments, marred with lawlessness, limited investments, and poor infrastructure. Under the current regime, it seems the state is setting up its base for the industrial revolution registering to second highest Gross State Domestic Product at 19.48 lakh crores in FY20-21 amid a pandemic-pushed slowdown, surpassing industrialized states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnakata. The state’s development under Yogi has silenced the critics many times but their intrinsic hatred towards the saffron-clad monk fails them to see his strong credentials. Be it infrastructure, investments, air connectivity, covid management the state has broken all previous records and surprised everyone beyond expectations.

Investments: The state has been making rigorous efforts to transform itself into a preferred investment destination. The success of the first Investment Summit was held in 2018 when the state attracted investments worth Rs. 5 trillion and out of which around 2 trillion has already got off the ground. A meteoric rise was witnessed when Uttar Pradesh was ranked 2nd in Business Reform Action Plan (BRAP) - Ease of doing business Rankings in 2018-19, up by 10 places in just a period of 3 years! The tremendous efforts put up by the government by delivering new labor reforms, investment policy 2020, startup policy, solar policy, etc, and holding annual Investment Summits has helped garner investments worth Rs. 5 trillion since Yogi has come to power. The state government has identified around 22,000 acres of land along Expressways for industrial development. Nivesh Mitra, a single-window system to enable businesses for online submission and tracking of applications has braced up the state to achieve an outstanding query resolution rate of 94%. Uttar Pradesh is becoming a new industrial hub in the manufacturing sector in IT, auto, defense, and services. State exports have also increased to 32% in the last 2 years and also the state has decided to develop 75 districts as export hubs. Yogi’s promptness to turn the covid challenge into an opportunity was seen when the government provided sops to companies in case they shift their base from China to UP. It seems the state is marching ahead steadily and may achieve the target of 1 trillion soon under the visionary leadership of Yogi.

Infrastructure: High-speed connectivity and rich infrastructure projects are undergoing aggressively to catch up the speed with the growing investments in the state.

Expressways: UP is on its way to becoming a land of expressways with Mega Projects (4+1 and 5 Expressways) like Purvanchal Expressway (Delhi – Ghazipur) which shall link with Gorakhpur link expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway which shall connect industrially backward Bundelkhand areas to Agra- Lucknow Expressway, Ganga Expressway (600kms) which is one of the country’s important infra project and also state’s longest expressway which shall be expanded in Phase 1 and Phase 2.

All the expressways aim to cover agricultural, tourism, and industrial districts. On the completion of expressways, a distance of 1900 km is expected to be completed. UP already boasts of India’s longest Expressway network. The government shall also develop industrial corridors and manufacturing units alongside expressways. One of them is the Defence Corridor alongside Bundelkhand and Agra-Lucknow Expressway where 50 MoU have been signed to manufacture night vision types of equipment for armed forces.

Airports: Uttar Pradesh is set to become the state with the highest five international airports. Kushinagar is the third airport that has got permission for an international flight. In just three years, 5 other airports Gorakhpur, Hindon, Agra, Prayagraj, Bareilly have become operational. The Yogi government has allocated Rs. 1000 crores for land acquisition for Maryada Purshottam Shriram International Airport, the construction of which has begun on a war footing and is personally monitored by the Chief Minister himself. It is expected to be operational early next year. Financially backward Bundelkhand shall also get air connectivity at Lalitpur. The Jewar International Airport which is currently underway is to be built on the lines of the world’s famous airports in London, Moscow, and Milan.

The government has taken a slew of initiatives for the electric vehicle industry as well. It has invited companies to set up charging stations in major 8 cities viz Agra, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, Prayagraj, Meerut, Varanasi.

Covid Management: Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India could achieve this spectacular growth rate because it could successfully manage the covid situation. When 40 lakh migrant laborers returned during lockdown via special trains, the government worked on war footing to arrest the spread of the virus. It came a long way from zero labs and covid tests to a whopping 1.5 lakhs tests daily. Not only this, the government conducted skill remapping of 32 lakhs of laborers so that they could be provided with jobs. Yogi formed 11 committees who worked around the clock to arrange isolation centers, quarantine facilities, to look after transportation and shelter homes. Financial aid, free food to the poor, community kitchens, the supply of essential commodities are some of the other important steps taken for public care.

Ram Mandir: Uttar Pradesh could be the next big tourist destination once the Ram Mandir is completed. The government is also promoting the idea of Nadi Sanskriti (river culture) through Ganga Yatra. The state undertook plantation drives to expand the green cover.

Piped Water: Government’s initiative “Har Ghar Nal” shall connect large parts of the water deficit areas of Sonbhadra and Mirzapur with piped water connection.

MSME’s: 13 lakh MSME units in UP have been given loans of Rs. 42,000 crore in FY 2020-21 thereby generating 65 lakhs direct and indirect employment opportunities in the private sector. UP alone accounts for 14% of India’s MSME. For rural development, 80000 rural women have been appointed as Bank Correspondents to ease the banking operations in villages.

Uttar Pradesh is marching ahead steadily with industrialization, development, and good governance. There are other developments like the crackdown on mafia seizing properties worth 758 crores of UP dons, Shakti campaign for women empowerment, the upcoming Film City over an area of 1000 acre in Greater Noida, Arogya Mela, and medical colleges for robust public health are noteworthy which makes the state indeed a land of possibilities and industrial growth.
